Sol Community - What do YOU think about our class titles?

One of our OG Sol teachers, Erin Sprague is back on the schedule and has made a motion for change of our yoga class titles.

We’d love to hear from YOU!

More information

In 20+ years of yoga-ing, we have named, re-named and discussed for hours and hours all the different ways of communicating information. And we continue! Historically we have offered roughly two veins of yoga - non flow & flow yoga. Flow yoga at Sol is meant to include sun salutations and work with a style that is commonly known as vinyasa yoga. This is a more athletic style of yoga. Over the years, we have included classes titles such as hot yoga, power yoga, vinyasa yoga, flow yoga, flow yoga 1-2, flow yoga 2-3, vigorous yoga, etc.

The other vein (non-flow) is much more broad - at Sol - excludes the sun salutation or ‘vinyasa’ and offers infinite other sequences, postures, movements, and styles. It can be easy or challenging but does not include the classic sun salute. For many years, we called this GENTLE yoga. But this description seemed to convey that it is always easy, or basic. People seemed to think that PROGRESSING in yoga, meant moving UP to flow yoga, which is not the case at all.

Also, we found that many teachers really like to include very slow sun salutations in GENTLE yoga, so for a while we abandoned GENTLE and had MIXED yoga (which was a hybrid between ‘GENTLE’ and ‘FLOW.’

The other conversation we often re-visit is class levels: easy, moderate, hard, etc. Level 1, 2, 3, etc - all the various slightly different adjectives. When we have a large pool of practitioners, we can offer more specific levels of classes. Generally, we air on the side of accesssibility and inclusivity.

A couple years ago, about 15+ teachers gathered and had a community forum. discusssed this matter and after several hours of thoughtful discussion, we decided to simply define the different classes as YOGA & (a more specialized yoga) FLOW YOGA.
